Now this 'Mech is not going to do much for you unless you can control it as well as you can control your own body. This course section will help you understand and change your 'Mech controls.
The main rule to follow here is do what is most efficient for your own piloting style. For example, I leave the keyboard with it's default mapping, but I usually change 75% of a joysticks configuration when piloting via joystick.
Changing your cockpit controls is simple and flexible in the MechWarrior2 series. Here are the basic steps:
DOS-Based Versions:
Run the MechWarrior2 series simulator. Get to the main screen.
Right-click on the terminal to display the options menu.
Press the Cockpit Controls menu item.
If you have a joystick attached, search for the joystick that is closest or matches the joystick controls that you have installed. Set that joystick to active status (white) and set the Mouse to in-active (red) by right-clicking with the mouse changes the controls status.
Press Custom Configuration menu-item to display the Customize Controls window. All keyboard and joystick commands are displayed in this window
There are 4 pages of control mappings. Keep all joystick control commands on page 3 and/or page 4.
Keyboard commands are preferenced by kybd, and joystick has notation such as flstk, etc.
If a joystick is attached, use the Suggested Joystick Configuration as a starting point for you joystick control.
Windows 95 based versions:
This section gives you a starting point in which to map all joystick command when piloting a BattleMech. Remember that this is only a suggestion, and it is important for you to change the control settings to fit your needs. You must be in the Cockpit Controls Custom Configuration program to execute these commands.
| Joystick Control | BattleMech Control | Description |
| Hat Left/Hat Right | Torso Left/Right | This adds flexibility of your 'Mech. Torso twisting is ultra-important defensively. |
| Hat Up/Hat Down | Zoom In/Out | Rapid zoom in/out is important during simulated drops. This is because the simulator resolution may have to be set low, causing targets to be blurry. |
| Rudder Left/Rudder Right | Torso Left/Right-w/
AC* Chassis Left/Right-w/oAC* *Auto-centering |
Rudders provide quick movement of whatever they are attached to. For all MechWarrior2 series simulators, assign the rudders to the Chassis L/R funciton of your 'Mech. |
| Throttle Up/Down | Throttle Up/Down | This is the best function for the throttle. It adds the most realism to 'Mech combat. |
| Button 1/Trigger | Fire Group 1 | Group the low heat/short range weapons to the trigger. |
| Button 2/Left Button | Fire Group 2 | Group the high-heat lasers and the hard-hitting ballistic weapons to the right-thumb button. |
| Button 3/Middle Button | Fire Group 3 | Group the missiles to another right-thumb button. |
| Button 4/Right Button | Cycle Group | Cycle through the group so that you can check range and get missile locks. |
The following table is the list of default keyboard commands. Although it will probably not be necessary to change them, this chart is a usefull reference when training in the Pilot Training course.
